A major asphalt company with locations in nearly two dozen states wants to expand its facility at the Roswell International Air Center. Based in Jackson, Mississippi, Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions, Inc., specializes in everything from polymer asphalt and emulsions to the overall preservation of high quality roads. The company already has a presence at the airport property, located at 49 East Martin Street, but now wants to expand with plans to build a $2 million storage tank as well as new roads and a buffer that would include around 125 trees. Because the 13.3-acre site in question is owned by the City of Roswell, as is the larger airport itself, Ergon would need the approval of both the city’s Legal Committee as well as the Roswell City Council before any work could begin. Ergon has offered to purchase the site for $340,000. The proposal would additionally need to be reviewed by the city’s Airport Advisory Commission, and would require a month-long due diligence review as well as a 45-day public comment period. Both Ergon and Roswell city officials have been engaged in talks for the past several months regarding the land purchase. It is not yet known when the actual review process for the project will begin. By Garry Boulard
